Step out in the Maryland / Washington D.C. area to unwind with us!

Summer is sweeping through quickly. Don’t let it pass by without taking some time to enjoy yourself! Downtime is important, and restorative. If you need some ideas for fun, local happenings, we have them here. There are so many great things happening all the time in and around Maryland and Washington D.C. We’re highlighting two of our very favorites this week.

If you haven’t seen the Phillips Collection’s newest exhibit, you won’t want to miss it. It’s called “The Warmth of Other Suns” and it features pieces that tell stories of global displacement. It was organized in partnership with the New Museum of New York, and presents the stories of about 75 historical and contemporary artists from a broad variety of backgrounds. These artists are from the U.S., Algeria, Bangladesh, Beligum, Brazil, Egypt, Ghana, Iraq, Lebanon, Mexico, Morocco, Syria, Turkey, UK, Vietnam, and more. Their work shares the same goal: to pose urgent questions around the experiences and perceptions of migration and the current global refugee crisis through video, paintings, images and more.

Our owner, Joshua Carin attended the member preview event and said that it was an incredibly powerful exhibition. It opened on June 22nd, but will run through September 22nd this year. If you’re interested in checking it out, watch our social media pages for a chance to win passes!

Another local “not-to-miss” exhibition from the National Building Museum is called “The Lawn.” It opened on July 4th but runs through September 2ndLawn is an expansive and immersive installation that takes up all of the museum’s Great Hall and offers interactive exhibits to interest visitors of all ages. It allows visitor to unwind while participating in quintessential summer activities on a vast, sloping green space.

Enjoy refreshments and lawn games while you meet neighbors from across the region while enveloped in a soundscape of distilled audio elements that evoke warm feelings of time spent outdoors in the summer—from crickets chirping to bees buzzing and lawnmowers whirring in the distance.

Lounging areas in the centerpiece feature interactive hammocks programmed with audio from prominent American storytellers as they share their favorite summertime memories. In addition, the LAB developed an augmented reality game that enables kids and adults to tap into the innocent and simplistic fun of chasing, collecting, and releasing fireflies while at the museum.

Geppetto Catering is proudly partnering with the museum to offer VIP Packages for visitors every Wednesday while the exhibit is open. The cost is $2,000 plus D.C. tax and includes up to 50 wristbands for visitors to access the Lawn Exhibit, and to enjoy private access to the P.C. suite from 6-9pm, guest tables and seating, hors d’oeuvres, and a beer & wine cash bar with 2 free drink tickets per guest.
